Russell Wilson will be joining the Broncos very soon, and the young and talented group of receivers is quite excited that one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL is coming to town.
Courtland Sutton, a former Pro Bowler, was the first to express his delight, saying that “Russ” coming in was exactly what the young group of players needed while speaking on NFL Total Access. Sutton was excited by the prospect of such a successful quarterback joining their ranks and the things that he would bring to the table.
A Brand New Offense
The Russell Wilson trade will go through after the new league year starts on March 16, but Sutton and the other Broncos wide receivers, Tim Patrick, Jerry Jeudy, and K.J. Hamler have already got in touch to start offseason workouts together in preparation for the move.
Sutton said that Wilson arriving set the tempo for the whole team. He added that a new quarterback meant a “brand new offense” so, understandably, they would need some time to build the chemistry between them. But Sutton plans to enjoy the process and said that it was “exciting for sure.”
A Game Changer
NFL fans and analysts have always spoken about the Broncos as being a quarterback away from getting a guaranteed playoff spot and being a serious contender for the AFC West title.
The last time the Broncos were in the playoffs was in 2016 when they beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 to win Super Bowl 50. Fast-forward six years and the Broncos haven’t made a single playoff appearance since then. But Wilson’s arrival can change that.
The Toughest Division in the NFL
However, Sutton is not getting ahead of himself. He knows that nothing has been achieved yet and that the Broncos will need to put in the hours before the season starts to accomplish their goals.
Looking at AFC West reaffirms the notion that the Broncos will have to work very hard to get to the playoffs after six years of playing regular-season football only. The Kansas City Chiefs, one of the best teams in recent years in the NFL, and the Las Vegas Raiders, a team that played in the playoffs a month or so ago, are also there. And so are the Los Angeles Chargers, currently trading for Khalil Mack, a top pass rusher.
Sutton is well aware of all of that, though, and he knows that the only way to handle the AFC West is to “put that work together.” He said that Russell Wilson coming was all good and well, but that it only sounded good on paper. In other words, they had to start putting the work in now and continue doing that until the beginning of the season.
