Davante Adams is going to move from Green Bay to the Las Vegas Raiders in a blockbuster $142.5 million trade. The Raiders have given the Packers two 2022 NFL draft picks, one of which is a first-rounder, in exchange for the star wide receiver.
What’s interesting is that Adams’ trade comes on the heels of Aaron Rodgers extending his contract with the Packers. Many believed that a Davante Adams trade would throw a spanner in the works for the Rodgers – Packers negotiating process. However, it now seems that Rodgers’ camp was aware a trade was inevitable and was okay with it.
A Five-Year $142.5 Million Deal
Davante Adams will sign a five-year deal and will get approximately $28.5 million per year. That comes to a total of $142.5 million – money that would have convinced anyone to come to Las Vegas, and that makes Adams the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL.
When he joins his new teammates, Adams will get to once again play with Derek Carr, the quarterback he played with at Fresno State. Last year, Adams said that it was his dream to be reunited with Carr, so he is probably delighted with the move.
Back then, he said that he loved Derek to death. He went on to say how they got a great friendship, and they often talked to each other. He even singled out Derek Carr as one of his best friends.
Rodgers Knew that Adams Would Leave
Soon after the trade was announced people started wondering what impact it would have on Aaron Rodgers and his future with the Packers. According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, Rodgers knew that this day would come and accepted it as something inevitable. Rapoport tweeted that Adams leaving didn’t affect Rodgers’ contract extension talks with the Packers.
He said that the situation was “too far gone” and that Rodgers knew when he signed his $150 million three-year contract that his top receiver won’t be playing alongside him next season.
However, one thing is for sure – Rodgers will miss Adams. While speaking to the Packers’ official website last year, Rodgers said that he played with some incredible players in the past 17 years, but that he had never seen the kind of dominance Davante Adams had from anyone else.
He claimed that Adams deserved all the praise that was coming his way and that his eventual inclusion in the Hall of Fame would be well-deserved.
